"A false balance (scale) is an abomination to the LORD, but a just weight is his delight." Pro 11:1 (Pro 20:10; Hos 12:7)

Better a poor man who walks in virtue than a rich man whose integrity is out of balance. A man's life begins to end the day his virtue (desiring what's right) stops being of value to him. Integrity is priceless and not easily obtained unless greatly desired!

Honesty is a very expensive gift. Don't expect it from cheap people or things.

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.” (Isa 43:1b)

God created you to be beautiful on the inside not just to look good on the outside. Be patient, every day may not be a good day, but there's good in every day because God’s at work in you.

HE changes caterpillars into butterflies, sand into pearls and coal into diamonds using time and pressure. He’s working to make you beautiful as well.

Isa 26:3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”

We can never avoid strife in the world around us, but we can avoid stress when we fix our thoughts on God, we can know perfect peace even in turmoil.

We’re promised a new song, a psalm declaring our strength is secure in our salvation and is appointed by God for our walls and army (vs 1).

In this I find perfect peace through a Heavenly mindset (Col 3:2 “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”) that provides a steady and stable spirit amongst life’s turmoil.

This is further promised by God’s unchanging love and provisional power, so I’m not shaken by the surrounding chaos (Phl 4:7 And the peace of God, that surpasses all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”)

My strength and peace will only be as secure as the foundation on which I lay it.

Not in the creation, nor in any created enjoyment, nor in riches, nor self-righteousness, nor in the depths of my heart or any carnal privileges.

But, only in the Creator Himself as exhorted in (vs 4) “Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord JEHOVAH is everlasting strength.”

Peace does not promise freedom from the storm but promises peace amid the storm.

No Jesus, no peace; Know Jesus, know peace!

Isa 25:11a-12 “… and he shall bring down their pride together with the spoils of their hands. And the fortress of the high fort they walls shall he bring to the ground, even to dust.”

Since the tower of Babel man has continued to try and build-up that around them bigger than God; including themselves.

But, (vs 7-8) tells us the Lord will remove the oppression and darkness of pride from man’s face and swallow up death in victory and wipe away the tears from all faces.

When the Lord speaks, he does what he says. It is comforting to know that God's plans and activities are directly tied to his word.

Thus, when we pray in humility according to His Word/will and claim His promises, he hears our requests.

We can see Paul proclaim this promise as he quotes part of Isaiah’s prophecy in (1 Cor 15:54) “So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.”

Another part of this verse is quoted by John in (Rev 21:4) “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death…”

God's ultimate victory is seen when death, our ultimate enemy, is defeated (Hos 13:14) “I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death…”

Cautious, no matter what heights you reach if its platform is pride the fall that’s coming is a fact. (Pro 16:18)

Humility is not cowardice, meekness is not weakness. Rather they are foundations on which God lays His promises.

Isa 42:6 “I am the LORD; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations.”

These verses are quoted in (Mt 12:18-21) referencing our serving Savior, Christ!

And like Jesus, we too are called to righteousness in Him (2 Cor 5:21).

Revealing a character of gentleness, encouragement, justice, and truth.

When you feel broken and bruised or burned out in your spiritual life, God won't step on you (vss 3 a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench”) or toss you aside (vs 4He will not grow faint or be discouraged”) as useless, but will gently pick you up.

God's loving attributes are desperately needed in the world today. Through God's Spirit, we can show such compassion and light to those around us, reflecting God's goodness and hope to them.

Point being: I can only be a light of righteousness if my switch is turned.

This requires me to take off my own worldly garments before I can put on Christ’s robe of righteousness.

In doing so, I can fulfill God’s purpose (vs 7 to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness.”) … (Acts 26:18)

Two ways of spreading light: be the candle or a mirror that reflects it.

Darkness can only exist when there is an absence of light (Jn 1:5).

Isa 40:12 Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?”

What imagery… that all of creation, from me to the vastness of the heavens and everything in between, can fit into the hollow of God’s hand.

Ch. 40 of Isaiah describes God’s power to create, His provision to sustain, and His presence to help.

The Lord is encouraging His children that even though they were in captivity in Babylon, know that Babylon is likewise still in the hollow of His hand.

And thus promises “He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arms, and carry them in his bosom…” (vs 11)

Showing me that nothing can be likened to Him (vs 25), yet I can quickly limit my understanding of His glory and might when I compare Him to what I experience on earth.

Point being: I must not define God through my life, but rather define my life through God.

More imagery… He challenges us concerning who can view this celestial globe and the heavens and not be astonished by its vastness. And (vs 12) says the Lord meted (measured) heaven with the just the breadth of His hand.

We must not be foolish and self-discouraging to equate God’s sufficient ability to provide for our needs by measuring the size of our burden before us to our immeasurable God! (Eph 3:17-20)

The cross shows the serious of my sin, but it also shows me the immeasurable love of God.

Don’t limit what is limitless by doubt!

Isa 39:8 “Then said Hezekiah to Isaiah, Good is the word of the LORD which thou hast spoken. He said moreover, For there shall be peace and truth in my days.”

It is just with God to take that from us which we make the matter of our pride, and on which we build a carnal confidence.

Consider David’s pride in numbering his people, God took a course to make them fewer.

Now we see Hezekiah boasts of his treasures, and looks upon them with too great a complacency, he is told that he acts like the foolish traveler who shows his money and gold to one that proves a thief.

If we could but see things that will be, we should be ashamed of our thoughts of things that are.

If Hezekiah had known the successors of Babylon would hereafter be the ruin of his family and kingdom, he would not have been as boastful and complacent with God’s faithfulness.

We cannot certainly foresee what will be, but are told, “All is vanity” (Ecc 1:2), and therefore it is foolish vanity for us to take complacency and confidence/pride were humility should be.

Such confidence/pride in one’s life is prone to lead them into alliance with equal character.

Hezekiah thought himself to be very happy in his friendship with Babylon, though it was the mother of harlots and idolatry.

And what started off as good courtship brought about the fall of Jerusalem… (1 Cor 15:33 “Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.” NASB)

Point being: Hezekiah got a what he wanted, but what he got wasn’t worth having!

Hezekiah came to know God’s blessings and deliverance for his family and kingdom would end with him (vs 8).

Why, he left his humility and, in his confidence/pride walked out of God’s will into folly and vanity?

Be careful with choices that change God’s course, it can also change your source for confidence

Isa 38:1 “… Thus saith the Lord, Set thine house in order: for thou shalt die and not live.”

Do we truly want what God wants?

Interesting that Kind Hezekiah was more interested in the Lord’s temporal deliverance than he was His eternal deliverance.

Hezekiah just spent Ch. 37 praying for his kingdom and its deliverance from Assyria.

Which God faithfully delivered by defeating the Assyrians with His own hand.

Yet, when the Lord sent His message through Isaiah for Hezekiah to prepare his home, that the Lord was calling him home eternally Hezekiah wanted nothing to do with that deliverance.

One must be cautious in seeking their will over the Lord’s.

Point being: Hezekiah got what he asked for, but not what he wanted!

Meaning the kingdom, he once prayed for God’s protection over, ended with a leader who did more damage than an army could.

Hezekiah’s life turned to folly and foolishness with Babylon and he birthed the most wicked king Israel ever experienced in his own son Manasseh who ruined the nation (2 Kg 21).

Doing something for God (I have walked before thee in truth) does not entitle us to reimbursement from God (Lk 17:6-10).

Selfish giving always leads to selfish living, which is never a good thing (Pro 16:8)

Hezekiah wanted HIS will for his life more than he wanted God’s will, so God gave him what he wanted.

With selfishness, you’ll get what you want, but you won’t want what you get (II Sam 13:1-15).

Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it.

Isa 32:17  “And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance forever.”

Those who see no value in virtue (righteousness), will find problems with peace.

Point being: God’s peace is the promise of all being right, not around you, but within you!

This is not accomplished by selfish works of righteousness done by men.  Though peace may be had and enjoyed in doing them, yet it does not arise and flow from their self-defined works.

Rather, it’s the righteousness of Christ dwelling in the hearts of man. Those who seek His virtuous traits of wanting what is right in all circumstances.

Don’t be lured by self-defined acts of doing good as works of righteousness in Christ.

Rom 14:17 “For the kingdom of God is not meat and rink; but righteousness, and peace,; and joy in the Holy Ghost.”

The world is full of heathens who help, that does not define righteousness.

Man can’t buy true internal peace. Such efforts only offer moments of feeling right.

One can’t live in selfish sin, and purchase peace by self-defined works.

Internal and eternal peace comes by way of Christ righteousness, which is wanting what is right by the Lord’s will and not our own.

God never alters the robe of righteousness to fit the man. Rather He alters the man to fit the robe!

Isa 28:16  “Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.”

We’re familiar with the lyrics of The Solid Rock “On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,”

The leadership (magistrates) of Jerusalem had become self-reliant and more so self-righteous in their efforts to lead and establish judgement and lulled themselves asleep in carnal security (vs 15).

Stating they had made a covenant not established upon the cornerstone God provided in Christ.

If I can’t stand firm in my faith, I won’t stand at all. (Isa 7:9)

God illustrates in (vs 20) “For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it: and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it.” Clarifying my personal resources are and will prove unreliable to shelter me.

Man’ effort of self-righteousness and self-reliance, will prove to be self-deceptive; one can never be at peace, safe and of comfort. The bed is too short, the covering is too narrow.

Like Adam and Eve’s fig leaves, the same of their nakedness will still appear.

Our faith does not make things easy, it makes them possible.

Resting assured that despite what is shifting around me, if I’m standing on “The Solid Rock” I’ll find peace, safety and comfort in my circumstances.

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

Isa 28:12 “… this is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.”

Here is a gracious promise of God's favor to the remnant of his people.

The Israelite's were reproved and threatened for their dullness and stupidity, and inaptness to profit by the instructions which the prophets gave them in God's name (vss 9-13).

Likewise, I can mistake being delayed with being denied.

What God is using for my rest and refreshing I can mistake for denial and discouragement.

Just because everything except you is moving about does not mean you’ve been left behind.

God’s delay in my life might have protected me from something that lie ahead I couldn’t see or wasn’t profitable for me. Or it may be God resting and refreshing me for something glorious that lies ahead.

The response I take will have the greatest impact on God’s will working in my life.

If I remain patient rather than impetuous in God’s process my spirit finds His rest rather than restlessness (Isa 40:31).

Just because you find yourself delayed, don’t feel denied. Enjoy His rest knowing the Father is preparing and refreshing you for something glorious.

You may not get there when you want, but He’ll get you there when He needs you, and rested!

Isa 28:9 “Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.”

One’s ability to learn and mature in the Lord has eternal effects while in the temporal.

The Lord’s purpose for me requires me to grow from infancy (temporal mindset) and strive for adulthood (eternal mindset), by offering an eternal motivation.

Mat 19:29 “And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.”

But, through this desired growth comes a sense of spiritual tension: we live in one place, but our true home is in another. Causing us to experience this in a couple of ways.

(1) The propensity to treat church like a bunker and try to escape the world.
(2). Looking forward to eternal life while embracing where God has placed us now.

Both can lead to avoiding our purpose in the Lord and the revealing of Himself through us.

This requires maturity to stay focused and endure the journey.

Jesus speaks of eternal reward with a rich young man (Mat 19) as well as His disciples.

The idea of seeking rewards of any sort might seem counterproductive to the Christian life. But, why would Jesus mention to the Disciples that they “will receive a hundredfold” if he didn’t want that to motivate them?

We should be aching for God’s promised eternal reward, but we should also be selfless like Jesus (Mk 10:45; 1 Jn 2:6).

Here’s the solution: our reward is God himself (Num 18:20).

Heaven in its glory and beauty, is where we will enjoy our eternal reward.

But whatever we desire now should be considered in light of our promised eternal reward, God himself.

View the present situation God’s put you in through the motivation of His eternal promises!

Act 18:26  “And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.”

Apollos was a gifted man mighty in scripture and eloquent the bible says ((Acts 18:24). But he had heard only what John the Baptist taught (repentance) concerning Jesus (Lk 3:1-18), so his message was not the complete story.

Apollos didn’t know about Jesus' life, crucifixion, and resurrection or the Holy Spirit.

Simply put, Apollos taught the things that tended to make way for Jesus. (Mt 3:3)

Point being: Apollos had a lot to offer, but he had need of more.

When it comes to truth, we all have something to give, but we also have much to gain!

Aquilla and Priscilla where disciples of Paul, who was teaching truth far beyond John the Baptist and what Apollos was able to garner.

A Christian no matter how mighty in scripture, has the opportunity to learn and grow.

One is either green and growing or ripe and rotten.

Apollos knew what he preached, but he didn’t know all that he needed to preach!

As a Christian we should be discipling one while we ourselves are being discipled…

Acts 18:21b “…if God will…”

As Paul prepares to leave Ephesus the Jews asked him to tarry longer. But Paul told them he must keep the Passover feast in Jerusalem.

However, Paul stated he would return, “if God will.”

Man can accomplish great things. He can build a great reputation amongst his peers. He can even change cultural vision and ways.

But if God’s not in it what’ to be gained from it?

In (gen 11:4) The tower of Babel had a great objective, but despite man’s greatest of effort they would’ve accomplished everything except what they started out to accomplish… find God!

God knows man’s heart, and when we succeed in the best of intentions, we’re prone to put our name right up there with God’s when we succeed without God being in it. (Eph 2:8-9)

One must wonder how many ministries or churches with good intentions fall into this trap. We might think that a big building with our name on it will give God the fame, but bigger isn’t always better in God’s eyes.

Throughout the Bible God used men who had little experience or leadership qualities and guided them to be the Godly men their situation required.

The truth is that we all struggle with the temptation to rely on our works, or those of our congregation, instead of relying on God.

Paul simplified the key to the success of his ministry in Jesus when he told the people in Ephesus, I will return, “if God will.”

Our life ministry will accomplish one of two things, “our fame” or “God’s name”

Rom 15:13  “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.”

In a multitude of conversations, I partake in throughout a day, I’m taking back how often I here the words “I hope.”  Two simple words spoken with the biggest of desire.

In John Newton’s lyrics to “Amazing Grace,” he wrote in the fourth stanza: “The Lord has promised good to me. His word my hope secures. He will my shield and portion be, as long as life endures.”

My hope can’t be placed in temporal situations, but only in the eternal promises of the Father.

Life is filled with disappointment. However, my hope isn’t meant to be placed in imperfect temporal things, but in that which cannot be shaken, the character of the loving Father (Rom 8:15-16)

Succumbing to disappointment occurs when I mistakenly placed my emotional hope in the care of something that can’t promise to deliver no matter it’s best intentions.

But I have this promised hope in my Father who can never fail in meeting ever need I have and ministers a hope that strengthens me to abound in the joy and peace He’s promised me.

Does your hope help or hurt others find theirs?

Isa 42:13  “The LORD shall go forth as a mighty man, he shall stir up jealousy like a man of war: he shall cry, yea, roar; he shall prevail against his enemies.”

I don’t know where you are this morning as you awoke? I pray your heart is a peace because it should be!

Yet, this time of year can bring anxiety, depression, doubt, worry and maybe even fear.

But this passage shows us such emotions are nothing but strongholds that come by way of our flesh, world or satan. And the only thing they accomplish is hindering you form God’s promises.

We serve The God who defeats His enemies!

There is something that brings about confidence in a country’s people when they see their military might a work protecting them. Bringing about an assurance that right will prevail.

As Christians, we must possess an even greater confidence in The Father.

If such worries are upon you, remember that we must possess a confidence in the promise that our God shows Himself even mightier to our foes and will prevail against them.

In every weakness we have is an opportunity for God to show His strength in our life.

A testimony is evidence of God’s promises prevailing in our life, don’t let strongholds strangle it

Mt 20:27-28And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

A true leader doesn’t stand on top of the mountain and point the way, he leads by walking through the valley showing the way.

Dominion and authority are great things man often pursue and pride themselves in having others bow authority to them.

Yet, Christ makes it clear concerning true leadership as defined by the constitution of the spiritual kingdom. We are to teach those of this kingdom, instruct them, counsel them and comfort them carrying their burdens (Gal 6).

It’s hard for vain men, even good men, to have such authority and not to be puffed up in it, and often do more hurt than good with it.

Jesus saw fit to banish it out of the church, Paul himself disowns dominion over the faith of any (2 Cor 1:24).

Christ eliminated this by clarifying the greater your authority and dominion given in Christ, the greater you serve one another, for mutual edification by way of humility and usefulness!

Paul made himself everyone’s servant: (1 Cor 9:19 “For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself a servant unto all, that I may gain the more.”)

The way to be great in God’s eyes and amongst the church is to be humble and serviceable. Those are to be best accounted of, and most respected.

True leadership must be for the benefit of the follower, not the leader.

Mar 10:27  “And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.”

The disciples had just seen the encounter between Jesus and the rich man desiring heaven.

The rich man he had everything except heaven and was faced with understanding that with man alone many things are impossible… especially eternal life!

We love stories about the victorious underdog, about the person who is told he or she can’t do something, then works harder than everyone else around him or her and accomplishes it.

Movies and novels about events like these are often heartfelt, wonderful and uplifting. But what do they really tell us about ourselves?

Jesus clearly stated that there is such a thing as “impossibility” for man “but not with God. For all things are possible with God.”

What this means is that ultimately, God is the Hero.

We, as His creation, have a part to play in His story, as little “h” heroes. We are the supporting cast that may have a brave scene or a series of profound lines, but in the real story, the real big “H” Hero is God.

The great thing about not being the hero is that we never have to worry about not being good or big enough to play the role.

God graciously brings us into His wonderful story and gives us far more than a supporting role, He gave us His Son and His shed blood, and ultimately fulfilling a role we could not pull off!

God’s miracles are birthed out of man’s impossibilities!

Php 4:7  “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Peace might be the most sought-after aspect of life.  So much so we will literally fight for it, that’s an oxymoron… fight for peace.

We desire it personally, within families, amongst loved ones and even life as a whole.

But we can be misguided in seeking it by looking around us instead of what’s in us.

We’re prone to look at others and measure ourselves as being happier with what we have or less happy because of what they have. Causing us to strive to obtain something we can’t!

Peace can only come from the Father (Jn 14:27 “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.”)

The peace of God doesn’t come from our surroundings, but only through the Spirit and dwells within the soul.

We can’t be guided to it by self-help books or with a few office visits, it comes from the Father above and dwells in our hearts below.

Ironically, peace was brought to us through an act that was not peaceful at all, death and the cross (Rom 5:1 “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:”)

Thus, peace does not dwell in the absence of problems, but only in the presence of Jesus.

The Father has not left peace for us to do, but to walk in it.

Those who are in the best of circumstances but without God can never find peace, but those in worst of circumstances but with God need never lack peace.

Psa 34:14 “Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.” (in Christ!)

Rev 21:4  “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”

The Christian group Hillsong, records a song titled “Cornerstone.”  The chorus reads:

“Christ alone; cornerstone
Weak made strong; in the Saviour’s love
Through the storm, He is Lord
Lord of all.”

There’s a book written that is titled “Charlie’s Victory.” A true story of a high school coach who lost his life to ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) at the age of 34, just 4 yrs. after his diagnosis.

Charlie continued to coach even after he could no longer move, breathe, or speak on his own. He lived on a respirator and communicated by blinking, winking and moving his lips. Everyone who knew him talked about his courage and inspirational attitude. One stated, “What we learn through him is that REAL strength is spiritual.”

Charlie’s strength was indeed spiritual. He walked a close walk with God. He and Lucy attributed their strength to God and God alone.

Life is riddled with like stories of individuals who suffer immensely through physical and emotional afflictions. This life isn’t fair, but this life isn’t eternal either. (1 Pt 5:10)

Paul made it clear that when he was his weakest that he was the strongest in the Lord. (2 Cor 12:10)

Within the book is a quote that sums up the promises and strength we need to cling to when facing such a fight in this life. That even though we are wounded at times we can still be “Wounded Healers” who can inspire others through their storms, knowing He is Lord, Lord of all.

Suffering is inevitable, Misery is optional!

Oh, my! What a difference can be made in our lives and the ability to influence others spiritually if we adopt this motto!

Misery is optional. What does this mean? It means that we all will eventually go through some kind of suffering as we live in this fallen world; however, when trouble does arrive, how we weather it depends on our outlook. It consumes us only if we allow it! Only if we choose it!

Find comfort in the storm/s knowing, He is Lord, Lord of all… and misery only masks that promise!

Amo 4:13  For, lo, he that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought, that maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth, The LORD, The God of hosts, is his name.”

I can have a tendency to be so loud that I can’t hear God.

God speaks to us in many ways. Through his Word (2 Tim. 3:16), through wise counsel (Proverbs), through circumstances (Jonah and Job), through dreams and visions (Acts 2:17), through peace (Col. 3:15), and many more.

Yet, my mind can be so busy and loud I miss the still small soft voice of the Spirit. (I Kg 19:12)

This day and time social media can be incarcerating when it comes to one searching for worth by the number of “likes” received. A dangerous path one can travel for “reassurance” that they are funny, pretty, smart.

God sees our heart in those moments, he hears our cries for assurance and the whole time God’s telling us how great our worth is, our beauty in and to Him.  But, do I hear Him?

It is scary how loud the world gets, how loud our minds get when we try and drown out the pain with more activity and less stillness.

Emotional addiction comes in many forms. Take the time to see the countless hours of just phone use on social media.

Don’t settle for a false moment based on your latest post to define your worth. Look to Him whose definition of you is beyond measure, it’s priceless concerning your beauty!  Time to put down the media and pick-up the Master and see what He likes about us.

He’s speaking to us now through His Word and the world around us.  If you’re willing to listen, He will make it clear how much you’re worth and how deeply He loves you!

In the loudness of the world, find the quietness and you’ll find the voice of God defining His love for you. (Psa 46:10)

Exo 15:2  “The LORD is my strength and song…”
Eph 6:10  “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.”

It’s no secret that in this day and age, life is fast-paced and demanding. It’s not uncommon to feel overwhelmed with all we have to do and the little time in which we have to do it.

To make matters worse, we all carry guilt from our sins, feel stressed by the demands of life around us, and may even be struggling physically or emotionally.

Yet when we struggle, we shouldn’t focus on our feelings and problems but on the faithfulness and power of God.

Some of the most comforting words in the Bible come from Mt 11:28. Jesus says, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Notice, Jesus offers us His yoke. This means that work is still required of us, but it’s much easier with His help than it is all alone. Often, we labor in life utilizing the wrong resources to address life and our burdens. Like trying to carry a load of bricks with a one-handle wheelbarrow.

So, we get frustrated and just pray for the Lord to move the load for us and all the while He wants us to carry the load but with His strength and power.

God promises us the strength to overcome anything (Phl 4:13). In Psa 23, David says, “He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul…”

If God can turn darkness into day, He can turn a burden into a blessing.

In the most ragging storms there is still peace in the soul for those who harness the right yoke!

Gen 15:17  “And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces. 18  In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram…”

In the dead of night, while Abram slept, God made a promise that changed the course of history. But promise is too light a word… It doesn’t carry the weight that it does in this event.

God made a covenant with Abram that showed him how serious he was about keeping his word.

Catch the imagery.

Just a few verses earlier (vs 9), God asked Abram to bring, “Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”.

Then, all the animals except the birds were cut in half (Gen 15:10) and laid on the ground. There was a path between the bodies and the fire pot and flaming torch floated over it.

Now imagine this scene. Orange light from the flaming torch flickers across the animals split in two on either side. The smoldering pot floats between them.

And in this act, God himself is saying: Abram, if I don’t keep my covenant with you, let what was done to these animals be done to me.

God’s nature is faithful. His word always comes to pass. He is so serious about keeping his promises he would take such bold action in front of Abram and eventually the cross.

In both Covenant’s (O.T. & N.T.) God offered the expense of life fulfill them.

We know how radical God is about keeping his promises, because he did give up his own life on the cross nearly 2,000 years ago, keeping His promise.

We can’t doubt the Lord’s promises, He gave His life for them… He’s a promise keeper!

He’s our Way Maker, Miracle Worker and Promise Keeper!

Jdg 2:10 “And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.”

How amazing! A whole generation that didn’t “know the Lord or the work that he had done”. How could this happen to God’s chosen people? These were the same people He performed miracle after miracle for.

And yet, this might seem like a familiar story to you if you live in the United States. A generation is currently on the rise that has rarely stepped foot into church, read their Bible, or even learned about Jesus.

It can be easy to place blame on others but, really, the next generation comes down to you and me. We are responsible for the discipleship and upbringing of the next generation.

Rom 10:14How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard?”

In Israel’s case each generation failed to teach the next generation about the love of God. Yet this was at the very center of God’s law (Deut 6:4-9).

We’re too apt to leave the teaching of the Christian faith to the Sunday morning church, but God makes it clear it’s the responsibility of the individual Christian to daily share and teach from generation to generation.

“Missions is not the ultimate goal of the church. Worship is. Missions exists because worship doesn’t.”

Always preach the Gospel , and use words when necessary.

Luk 9:61-62  And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. 62  And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

The greatest challenge for every Christian is to follow Jesus and pursue His purpose for our lives without looking back.

Jesus illustration of plowing a field would have made perfect sense to His disciples living an agricultural life.  If a farmer didn’t focus on what was ahead but distracted by what was behind or on the periphery, it would be impossible to plow in the right direction.

But, for many of us both negative and positive aspects of our lives have the potential to become distractions:
Past successes, Past failures, Internal insecurities, External circumstances, Comfort & security, Relationships, Career

It’s interesting that the man who wants to follow Jesus is distracted by something that we would consider a positive: his home and family.

Jesus is showing us that even something that’s a huge blessing in our lives can become a distraction if it becomes more important than pursuing Jesus and His purpose for our life.

The only good thing worth looking back on is the goodness and mercy of God’s forgiveness.

Don’t look back, nothing ever changes there.

To many Christian’s are still weeping at the foot of the cross. Focused on the Christ who died, not the Christ who LIVES. Don’t let yesterday rob you of today, which God has given you.

Just because yesterday didn’t turn out like you wanted it to, doesn’t mean your tomorrow can’t be better than you ever imagined.

Ecc 3:11 He hath made everything beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end

God has "planted eternity in the human heart." This means that we can never be completely satisfied with earthly pleasures and pursuits by fleshly efforts.

When David wrote for us to, “Delight yourself in the Lord” (Psa 37:4), he wasn’t writing to sound religious.

Religion cannot enjoy God, it can only fear him from a distance.

It can be easy for one to find themselves seeing God through the cold eyes of religion. Viewing prayer and worship as labors to earn favor, instead of gifts given to draw near to the Fountain of Life.

The biggest obstacle to enjoying God and learning to delight in him is the merit-based system we often find ourselves in as Christians.  Religion diminishes the gospel and Jesus by subtly conveying that his spilled blood and resurrection aren’t really enough.

Religion can reform a person’s life, but it can never transform him. Only the holy Spirit can transform a heart to find delight in God and the beauty of His Word and its eternal promises.

Religion says, “I obey: therefore, I’m accepted.” Christianity says, “I’m accepted: therefore, I obey.”

Religion is a stereotype, Christianity is Christ like. Don’t confuse the two!

1Co 2:5 “That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.”

Have you ever been giving a recipe for a wonderful meal you ate, but despite your best efforts, it didn’t turn out as well when you attempted to make it?  Chances are, you were missing a key ingredient or a vital step in the process needed to bring all the flavors together.

The same can be common when experiencing God’s word in my life.

Often, we can see others relationship with God and how He’s working through them. Longing to have the same experience they seek His word for direction and hope, but never see the spiritual effects.

First, it’s important to understand the Bible is no ordinary book. It’s not simply a history lesson, informative genealogy or just a rule book. The Bible is God’s divinely inspired word designed to be transformative, insightful and profitable for every life. (2 Tim 3:16-17)

The Bible is also God’s living word, meaning it’s relevant and applicable today. As readers today, the Bible can have the same impact in our lives as it has throughout history. (Jn 6:63)

The Bible discerns all truth for life and man, transforms the heart offering direction in our fallen world. Answers every question before man by separating good from evil by offering clarity for the soul. (Heb 4:12)

But how? How do I let the most powerful instrument ever given to man engage me at such a deep level?  And why are the effects of the Bible missed in so many lives at times? God is just and far, not a respecter of persons, but some are transformed, and others miss out?

They are missing the key ingredient, that vital process that brings about all that it offers:

FAITH!  (I can’t expect God’s word to transform me or my situation through osmosis)

Without faith the Bible is just a history book of genealogy and stories that will never allow me to taste and see that God is good (Psa 34:8 “O taste and see that the Lord is good…)

Without faith, I’m taking ingredients out of the process of a recipe and hoping for the same taste.  It’s faith (putting God’s word into action in your life by taking His word over yours) that activates every truth and promise in the Bible.

Dough can’t rise without putting the yeast into the process no matter how much you pray!

And it takes time for a good meal to come together… in the process, faith-it till you make it!

Isa 40:31  “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

Waiting often goes against what I naturally and emotionally do. My natural inclination is to step on the gas and beat the yellow light, or partial red sometimes!

Waiting is difficult because we equate it with inactivity. But waiting, the Greek word (kaw-vaw) meaning to twist or bind together, describes a relationship that is inseparable. Meaning that if God is patient in His purpose with us then we are to be patient in Him.

The implication is that we are waiting and watching with expectation towards God’s greater will.

During these periods of waiting, God is often refueling and refining me for His purpose. Everything around me needs to be refueled cars need gas, bodies sleep, cell phone recharged. So, why can’t this be the case with my spiritual life as well?

What may seem like inactivity may be the period in which God is doing the greatest of activity.  From my perspective it may be a difficult time for me but very purposeful from The Father’s.

I must understand, no matter what I’m able to accomplish by moving forward in the flesh it will pale in comparison to what God can do through His Spirit and timing.

Patience is the companion of wisdom.

2Ki 5:12  “Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage.”

Naaman was commander of the army of the king of Syria, but he was a leper who wanted to be healed of his leprosy. Naaman heard about the prophet Elisha and was told that Elisha would cleanse his leprosy.

Imagine yourself in this situation. You’ve had a crippling disease for your entire life. You’ve finally arrived at the place where you know you can find healing! And what happens next? The prophet is a no-show! The person standing before you: the messenger of Elisha who only offers instructions.

Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored, and you shall be clean.” (vs 10)

Naaman is angry! The Jordan is a dirty river; the waters of his own home are much cleaner. If all Naaman wanted was to be clean, he could have just as easily stayed home and bathed. In a rage, Naaman starts to turn away, unwilling to heed the words of the messenger.

Naaman had certain expectations of how his story was going to begin, continue, and end.

But, often God’s purpose is brought about by a process quite different than what man expects.

I must be careful not to reject God’s process just because I don’t understand His purpose.

The instructions like Naaman got may appear to be a dirtier process. They may require me to be patient, humble or broken, that’s fine I won’t waver from my faith knowing He’s my healer.

God has a purpose for my pain, process for my struggle and a blessing for my faithfulness.

While I may not understand His purpose today, through my faithfulness my spirit will see clearly tomorrow.

Often God will put a problem in my path for me to see the purpose of His power for my life.

2Th 1:3 “We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity (Love) of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth;

Ever found yourself by way of a sermon, book or another Christian, challenged to strengthen your faith?

It’s common to focus on our relationship with God, but less apt to focus on our outward expression of our faith, which is love. To grow in faith, we must realize that true faith produces the fruit of love. (Jn 13:35)

Paul understood that the church of Thessalonica was increasing in their faith by evidence that their love one for another was increasing. Paul told Timothy that he is to love from a pure heart, good conscience and a sincere faith (1 Tim 1:5).

Our faith is ultimately grounded in God who showed His great love towards us through the Son and the cross (Rom 5:10). Unfortunately, in this hateful, attacking, slanderous filled world many outside the church see those of proclaimed faith condemning and judgmental… not fruits of the spirit (Gal 6).

Our greatest testimony should be illustrated through our love towards a world who is missing the greatest love that’s available to all. And when that love of God is offered and displayed, it’s the best example of faith, allowing others to see the God who is Love! (1 Jn 4:8)

Love is a gift of God, pay it forward!

Col 3:2 “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”

If you’ve been around young children, you quickly realize how much they live in the present.

They have difficulty realizing the future consequences of their actions. Yet, as a follower of Jesus I can be just like a young child who gets focused on the here and now, focused on living in the tangible present and forget the spiritual promise of tomorrow.

Paul encourages the church of Colosse of this, don’t get hyper-focused on the problems of today but rather focused on the promises of tomorrow.

Such a truth requires a different perspective on our temporal lives. To “set our affections on things above” requires me to look at every situation in my life from God’s perspective and not through my personal feelings.

This provides the antidote for life’s situations; allowing me to take a proper view from God’s perspective and helping me not to act or re-act in the present but in the spiritual.

This isn’t easy but can have an immediate impact on the here and now.

(vs   5-10) … I get out of the flesh and into the spiritual
(vs 12-13) … I can learn humility, meekness, forgiveness
(vs 14-15) … I can learn to respond in love and peace
(vs 16-17) … I can learn to be grateful during life’s challenges

I’ll never learn to help change the world if I’m living like the world, be a world changer not chaser.

2Co 11:26 “In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness. Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.”

IT’s obvious Paul’s life was lived in a perpetual Monday status.

Whether you’re working to build or maintain a ministry, sustain a career, raise a family, build a marriage or simply live life no one is exempt from the perils it brings forth.

You may find yourself questioning God, wondering if He made the right decision in choosing you to do what it is He called your to do. After all, if I was meant to do this, wouldn’t it be easier? Wouldn’t there be more support of my efforts?

When looking at the above scripture, I must remember that what Paul is speaking of occurred not only when he was working in his calling, but also when he was working within the will of God!

He was doing what God charged him with doing, and still he was met with opposition after opposition and trouble upon trouble.

What this scripture shows us is that doing the will of God does not exempt us from trials.

What He does promise us is that He will be with us and that He will never leave us nor forsake us. (Deut 31:6).  And that our reward will be worth the obstacles we face. (Gal 6:9)

If you find yourself feeling discouraged or defeated in your ministry or any area of life, remember Paul’s sufferings and his impact on our faith despite it all. His words are still inspiring us today.

Focus on the fruits of your labor in the Lord and stop looking at the thorns. Endure their pain, you’re provided great promises!

Jn 9:1 “And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?  Jesus answered, neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.”

It’s interesting to see the illusions that offer two images in the same picture (Old Woman – Young Girl). That’s often an accurate interpretation when it comes to life when looking at the hurting and evil around us.

Depending on my perspective, I’ll either find purpose or pain.

When I hurt physically I understand there is something that needs to be addressed or corrected.  The pain is purposeful and helpful despite the discomfort and pain I must endure.

The disciples decided to focus on the hurt and sin instead of seeing the picture of God working through it. I can do the same thing. Why did God allow this to happen in my life?  I must stop focusing on the “disease” and should focus on the cure that is in Jesus.

Stop looking for something to blame and start looking for God in praise!

I can’t be blinded by the problem pain brings, instead of seeing God’s glory displayed through it.  If not, like the disciples I’ll miss out on the wonderful works of the Lord.  Knowing in the worst of pain, “God’s glorious works should be manifest in it.”

I often think of Joseph (Gen 50) when facing painful and difficult problems. The darkest of evil was perpetrated by his brothers, and yet God turned the pain into a glorious work that even blessed the evil who were responsible.

Sometimes the greatest pain inflicted upon those around me, as well as myself, can manifest the greatest blessing. I must choose the right perspective, I can focus on the hurt or the Healer!

The right perspective keeps me from living in the shadows of yesterday and allows me to walk in the light of today and the promised hope of tomorrow.

Job 6:11 “What is my strength, that I should hope? and what is mine end, that I should prolong my life?”

This can be a hard question that Job is asking. Especially when I feel hopeless in my situations.

But I can assure you of this, whatever has your hope, has your heart!

In (Psalm 86:10-12) David’s prayer asked God to unite his heart to His word. Like David, I struggle at times with a divide heart. It’s easy to get caught up in words and not solely God’s Word. The danger is man’s word causes my mind and heart to wander and hope to diminish.

David said, “teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in truth.”

The question is poignant, “where do I place my hope?”

Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a knowing God. If not, feeling the situation is hopeless instead, you’re slamming the door in the face of God.

I know God is working things out for me, even if I don’t see it. I hold to my faith, I’m thankful for His promises and my hope is held in His hands.  Hope is the smallest of light that shines in my darkness and illuminates the promises of God’s love for me.

By putting everything in God’s hands and you’ll see God’s hand in everything.

Psa 34:18 “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”

We read our verse and yet, it can feel as if the Lord is a million miles away.

As the deep aches of grief and guilt surface and the tears run down my cheek, they bring with them the question of how could I have changed this situation?  Longing to be able to change it by any means necessary, but the pain burrows in and the daily frustrations wear the soul down.

These are not comfortable feelings and thoughts. Pain and grief are never comfortable. It’s human nature to want to pull in, away from the world. To want to go silent, keep to myself all the thoughts I dare to shout out loud.

Running from it. Numbing it. I distract myself.

Yet, the loving voice of God says that he is close. He is there to comfort me, he has rescued me.  Some answers we will never know this side of Heaven. The pain may have to be my cross to bear the rest of my days, but I must find comfort because I’m not carrying it alone.

Psa 56:8 is a beautiful verse, the Lord captures every tear I shed and bottles them… Even in my deepest sorrow, God cares!

He promises to be "close to the brokenhearted" and my source of power, courage, and wisdom, helping me through my trials. Don’t let your lack of ability to feel His presence fatigue you, know His promises. Sometimes he chooses to deliver us through our situation and not from it.

Often our greatest ministry will come out of our greatest pain.

I do my best to lean into the pain and not run from it, I’m promised on the other side is peace!

Pro 17:3 “The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts.”

Different metals purify at different temperatures. But, one must be careful to get the temperature just right, so that you don’t lose any of the precious metal being refined. Otherwise, you’ll burn it too much and it all turns to dust.

In this process it brings the dross (Isa 1:25; Pro 25:4) to the surface, forming a thin crust and is scrapped off. Dross is the concentration of the impurities that were once within the metal, but now they are being separated by the perfect application of heat.

The process is vigilant, requiring the refiner to apply the right amount of fire and heat without scorching the metal, again all the while the dross separates revealing the true value within.

This is the same refinement the Lord uses on our hearts (Psa 119:119).

With just the right amount of heat and trial, the Vigilant Refiner burns away the dross that is not just buried within us but has been a part of us for as long as we can remember. Peter says, "These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold" (1Pt 1:7).

If you’re in the Refiner’s Fire now don’t pull away and run, be patient and endure the heat because a greater beauty within is rising to the surface. The Lord will not scorch you but will separate you from that which hides your beauty.

The presence of the Lord was in the furnace for the three Hebrew boys. (Dan 3)

Jn 16:33 “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”

One can accurately say (Jn 16:33) is one of the more quoted or referenced scriptures in the N.T.

And yet we still awake to mornings with the first thought in our mind “I don’t feel I can face another day with trials. My heart is too full of hurt, hate, anger or sadness.”

In Psalm 69, Psalm for the brokenhearted, David himself talks of “deep waters and miry depths” (vss 1-4), “guilt” (vss 5-12), “cries of deliverance” (vs 14) he faced and felt hopeless so many times.

In (Jn 16) Jesus in His last moments with His disciples warns them about further persecution, why He was going and His return. He also promised them they would not be alone, but the Holy Spirit the comforter would be with them. Jesus knew what lay head and didn’t want the disciples shaken or destroyed.

Likewise, the Father knows what lay ahead for us and wants us to know we as well are not alone, our comforter is present, and that Jesus has already overcome the world and thus our trials.

By way of the Father’s promises we’re never deeper than He can descend and deliver us from it. WE must find our reason to “rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” (Rom 12:12)

2Ti 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”

We live in a society that wants to tailor everything to their desires.

We like to define our experience of reality and “have it our way” as Burger King offers.  Trying to customize everything from our meals to our cars.

Unfortunately, even though having life a certain way is by no means wrong, it is easy to fall into a trap of applying this type of philosophy to God’s word.  Becoming susceptible to only choosing to follow the parts that fit our wishes and likes.  What if someone makes us angry and we wanted to remain mad at them or seek our own defined justice?

If we could customize our won version of God’s Word, we could just ignore Eph 4:26.  Not requiring us to be accountable to growth, Christ-likeness, correction or instruction.  And leave inspiration to our own definition and wants.

We live in a world where truth has become relative to our situations rather than absolute. We change the definition by culture trends, opinions and man’s philosophy. Every word in the bible was inspired by the Holy Spirit and is just as valid today as it was when it was written.

Society has put God’s Word on trial, on the witness stand to defend itself, leaving truth itself to be weighed and determined by man’s jury.

It’s easy to discern truth. Just listen closely, God will never contradict His word… man will!
