“And
he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the
people that follow me; for they be faint… (6) And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and
Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?” Jdg 8:5-6
Gideon,
by way of God’s miraculous power, had just defeated the Midianites even though
they were greatly outnumbered. They now
find themselves in need of food and water as they pursued the fleeing soldiers;
they asked the leaders of Succoth (from the tribe of Gad who were believers) who
responded selfishly in fear instead of support of God’s work through
Gideon. They should have realized that
victory was certain because God was with Gideon. But they were so worried about
saving themselves from retribution that they never thought about God's power to
save. Don’t let fear blind you from God’s work, especially from those He is
utilizing. God will prevail with or without you, be quick to join others who
are engaged in His work and don’t hesitate to support with your time, talents, money
and prayer. Know the consequences of lacking faith will be greater than the
fear of retribution.
