“Then will the Lord be jealous for his land,
and pity his people.” Joel 2:18
The
transitions with which we see through the prophets are remarkable, but not
unaccountable. Wrath and promises on God’s
part, rebellion and repentance on man’s, succeed one another with great
rapidity. Yet there is clear and precise
order in these changes, which are always dependent upon moral and spiritual
relations, and are never arbitrary or coincidental.
1.)
Divine Relenting – This is found in the moral nature of God. He is
merciful and delights in mercy. Yet this attribute is only exercised upon
certain conditions; man’s attitude and heart.
Entreaty on the part of Judah accounts for the exercise of compassion on
the part of God
2.)
Divine Relenting Leads to the Removal
of Evil – The removal of the Northern Armies, intended for the correction
of Judah’s sins, is averted and famine is driven away. That which was once intended
as an affliction for correction is now retained by way of His great mercy.
3.)
Divine Relenting proves itself by Abundant Grace – Judah was assured
that, as a sign the storm of God’s wrath was past, they would enjoy the fruits
of the earth as the corn, wine and oil flourished again. Those who God pardons He blesses in their
humility, taking away His wrath by bestowing His grace, mercy and loving
kindness. Simple process; Repentance = Relenting,
Removal, Replenish
The
mercy of God’s deliverance is abundant, but it will always FOLLOW our repentance.
