Jdg 7:2 “And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to
give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me,
saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.”
It doesn’t matter how
great you are, but rather how great God is. The Lord knew Israel/man would and
has a great tendency to boast of his abilities and achievements. Thus, the Lord
forced Gideon and his men into a desperate need for the Lord to intervene on their
behalf, otherwise they were hopeless in their own ability. Too many apply their faith and trust in the
Lord by how big of a safety net they have. Gideon being reduced from 22,000 men
to 300 not only eliminated his safety net, but also any hope of victory by his own
power. Even though his visual odds had greatly diminished, Gideon was still willing
to put the battle into God’s hands and in doing so saw God’ hands in it when
the Lord delivered victory for Israel over the Midianites. Seldom will you see a boastful person who is
thankful, or a thankful person who is boastful (Jdgs 8:23). They say shallow
streams make the most noise, silent waters run deep. If you have to boast about
all of the material things achieved in your life, it’s probably because there isn’t
much else to it!
Boasting makes you seem
less impressive, not more impressive. If it’s worthy others will make it known (Pro
27:2).
